  1. Histone mRNA was tailed with ITP and subsequently ATP using poly(A) polymerase, and histone mRNA 3'UTRs were amplified by RT-PCR, cloned and sequenced. Sequences were aligned using the hairpin structure as anchor (in italic). The hairpin structure is followed by genome encoded nucleotides and a non-genome encoded tail added by poly(A) polymerase. The transition point from genomic sequence to non-genomic tail marks the 3' end of histone mRNA that is located three to six nucleotides after the hairpin.
