  1. Bacterial strains were grown to log phase and infected at a multiplicity of 10 with λ lac::cat819 nin5. Infected cells were aerated for 1 hour at 37°C, then plated on LB agar and LB agar supplemented with chloramphenicol, isopropylthiogalactopyranoside, and X-Gal. Recombination frequencies represent the ratio of chloramphenicol-resistant recombinants to total cell titer, normalized to the ratio of the strain at the top of each group of strains. Means and standard errors for at least three measurements are shown. Actual frequencies were 507, 2.49%; 606, 2.50%, 554, 7.76%; 607, 7.81%. The frequencies of Lac- recombinants in these crosses were published previously (Poteete and Fenton, 2000).
