ALCAM promotes apoptosis of K562 cells treated with PMA. A) Photomicrographs of control K562 (#15) and K562-ALCAM clones (#1, #2) stained with May-Grunwald Giemsa, at steady-state (upper panel) or following treatment with 20 nM PMA (lower panel) for 48 hours. PMA caused enlargement and extensive vacuolation in K562 cells (arrow) and nuclear fragments in K562-ALCAM cells (arrow head). B) Apoptosis as determined by the expression of Annexin V in K562 and K562-ALCAM cells at steady-state and following treatment with PMA for 24 hours.
